Syria’s New International Trade Corridor

Syria is regaining its strategic position as a link between Iraq, the Gulf, and Asia on one side and the Mediterranean and European markets on the other.

Its geographical location, ports, road network, storage facilities, and handling capacity provide an opportunity to establish new regional routes for trade and energy transportation.

Growing Transit Activity Through Syria

Operational developments indicate that approximately 1,000 to 1,200 Iraqi oil tankers are currently crossing Syrian territory each day, with volumes varying according to weather conditions, transportation activity, and tanker availability. [thawra.sy], [sana.sy]

This activity highlights the growing importance of the Syrian route connecting Iraq with the Mediterranean coast, while creating opportunities in transportation, storage, handling, and supporting logistics services.

The Haditha–Baniyas Project

Alongside road transportation, Syria and Iraq are working to develop the Haditha–Baniyas oil pipeline project, following the signing of memoranda related to the project and its technical and financial studies.

The project’s future target capacity is estimated at between 1.5 million and 2 million barrels per day. Once final agreements and engineering studies are completed, implementation is expected to require between 30 months and three years. [aljazeera.net], [almashhad.com]

The project could provide Iraq with an additional export route to the Mediterranean while strengthening Syria’s role in oil transit, storage, handling, and port services.

Baniyas as an Energy Gateway

In the opposite direction, transportation has begun for imported gasoline destined for Iraq through the Baniyas Oil Terminal.

The operation is being carried out under a renewable three-month agreement. The first shipment included 57 tankers, with plans to gradually increase operational capacity to approximately 200 tankers per day through the Al-Tanf border crossing. [sana.sy], [alsumaria.tv]

These operations generate transit-related revenue and strengthen the role of Baniyas and its facilities in regional energy transportation.

Logistics Investment Opportunities

The emerging opportunities extend beyond the transit of commodities and energy. Potential areas for investment include:

  • Road transportation and fleet management
  • Warehousing and distribution centers
  • Cargo handling, shipping, and customs services
  • Maintenance of transportation fleets and logistics equipment
  • Development of ports and associated facilities
  • Digital supply chain management systems
  • Safety, insurance, tracking, and monitoring services

Developing these activities could support projects serving both local and regional markets while transforming Syria’s geographical position into sustainable economic value.

Connecting East and West

From ports and highways to pipelines and storage facilities, Syria has a strategic opportunity to become a regional hub for transportation and logistics services.

Achieving this vision requires continued infrastructure development, efficient logistics services, and effective local and international partnerships capable of transforming geographical advantages into viable investments.
